Bandaranaike International Airport known also as Colombo International Airport or Katunayake International Airport is the biggest airport in the country. The port is located about 21 miles north of Colombo which is the country’s capital.
A few words about the airport interesting history. The port was set up in the time of the World War II – in 1944. The first Boeing 747 landed at the airport almost 30 years later – in 1971. Today Bandaranaike International Airport is a main base for SriLankan Airlines. In the same time, the airlines are the largest ones that the airport handles.
Today the airlines fleet operates 20 Airbuses flying to Europe, India and East Asia primarly. However, they also provide scheduled services to Middle East and Far East. Another airlines with it’s base on Bandaranaike International Airport is Mihin Lanka. This is much cheaper one. Indeed, Mihin Lanka is a low-cost airline. It’s fleet is much smaller because it includes only four Airbus aircrafts.
They are flying to the same directions as SriLankan Airlines but Europe. In 1967 Terminal 1 was opened. This is the oldest one and mostly it serves only international flights now. But before Terminal 2 was openned the first one had had to handle all the flights from all the directions including the abroad ones.
